MAKURDI – The Benue State House of Assembly (BNHA), has elected a new Speaker. He is Alfred Emberga Berger, representing Makurdi North State Constituency.
Berger was nominated Speaker of the House following the resignation of Aondoana Dajoh, as Speaker of the Assembly on Sunday.
The new speaker emerged during an emergency session of the House, presided by the Deputy Speaker, Lami Danladi, on Sunday.
Recall that Berger, leading three other lawmakers Shimawua Emmanuel (Vandeikya 2), Cyril Ikong (Oju 2) and Abu Umoru (Apa), that have been recalled to the Assembly were last week suspended for three months, while attempting to impeach the immediate past speaker, Aondoana Dajoh.
But twenty-one lawmakers, among them, the Deputy speaker of the House, Lami Danladi, after setting aside the rule of the House recalled their colleagues back to their fold.
The new Speaker, Alfred Berger, was nominated by Douglas Akya, Makurdi South and seconded by Abu Umoru, Apa State constituency.
He was confirmed in a voice vote by 25, out of the 32 members of the Assembly that were present at the sitting on Sunday.
Earlier, the former speaker who was not present at the sitting had tendered his resignation that was read on the floor of the House.
In his acceptance speech, Emberga, who was immediately sworn in as speaker, promised to uphold the integrity of the House at all times.
He also assured his colleagues of effective representation and pledged to work in harmony with the executive arm of government.
