FCT police ban firecrackers ahead of Yuletide, warn residents

The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has announced a strict ban on the sale, purchase, and use of firecrackers, knockouts, and other unauthorised explosives as the Christmas and New Year celebrations draw closer.

The Command said the decision followed reports of increasing circulation of fireworks across Abuja, raising concerns about threats to public safety during the festive period.

Police raise alarm over rising use of firecrackers in Abuja

In a statement issued on Monday, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, said the devices often trigger avoidable injuries, fires, and widespread panic.

She explained that beyond the physical risks, fireworks provide cover for criminal activities, as criminal elements take advantage of loud explosions to disguise unlawful operations.

According to her, indiscriminate use of firecrackers also disrupts public peace and poses greater danger to vulnerable people, including children, elderly persons, and individuals with medical conditions aggravated by sudden noise.

“The Command is appealing to residents to prioritise their safety and comply fully with this advisory,” Adeh said, stressing that the warning was necessary to maintain calm throughout the festive season.

Officers deployed to enforce ban and arrest violators

Adeh also disclosed that police units across the FCT have been directed to strictly enforce the ban.

Officers will monitor markets, residential areas, and public spaces to arrest anyone dealing in or using the prohibited items. She warned that violators will face prosecution.

The spokesperson encouraged residents to remain alert and report individuals or groups involved in selling or distributing explosives within the capital city.

The FCT is not the only region implementing such restrictions. Police commands in Imo and Plateau states recently introduced similar measures, announcing a total ban on the sale and use of fireworks ahead of the Yuletide.

With the festive period approaching, the FCT Police Command urged residents to celebrate responsibly and cooperate with security agencies to ensure a safe environment for all.
