Everton stunned Manchester United at Old Trafford with a gritty 1-0 victory despite being reduced to 10 men after just 13 minutes when Idrissa Gueye was sent off for slapping teammate Michael Keane during an on-field altercation.
Referee Tony Harrington showed Gueye a straight red card for violent conduct, a decision later upheld by VAR, leaving Everton to play the majority of the match a man down.
But instead of capitalising, United produced a flat, uninspired performance that marked a new low in Ruben Amorim’s tenure.
Despite dominating possession, United failed to create meaningful chances, while David Moyes’ resilient Everton side seized their moment in the 29th minute. Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall collected the ball, drove past Bruno Fernandes and Leny Yoro, and curled a superb strike into the top corner.
Jordan Pickford denied Fernandes on the stroke of half-time and later kept out a powerful Joshua Zirkzee header as United pushed for an equaliser, but Everton held firm to secure a famous victory.
United had arrived on a five-game unbeaten run, but their lack of incision and cohesion frustrated the home crowd throughout. The match was further overshadowed by Everton’s chaotic early moments, including the loss of captain Seamus Coleman before the internal bust-up between Gueye and Keane.
Gueye became the first Premier League player since 2008 to be sent off for fighting a teammate, adding another layer of drama to a night Everton will long remember and United will want to forget.
