Public commentator Reno Omokri has sparked fresh debate on X after questioning why Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi criticized the life sentence reportedly issued against IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu, linking it to ethnic prejudice.
In his post, Omokri argued that previous terrorism convictions involving individuals from different regions of Nigeria, including Kabiru Sokoto of Boko Haram and Charles Okah of the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND), did not elicit ethnic-based objections from Obi.
Omokri wrote that Obi did not claim the Nigerian state was “fighting Arewa” when Sokoto was sentenced, nor did he allege discrimination against the Ijaw or Christians when Okah received his sentence. This, he said, raises questions about why Obi is framing Kanu’s case through an ethnic lens.
The post has since attracted widespread attention, further intensifying political conversations around regional sensitivity, justice, and the ongoing national dialogue about fairness within Nigeria’s legal system.
