Pope Leo expresses deep concern over kidnappings in Nigeria, calls for safe release of victims

Pope Leo XIV has expressed deep sorrow and concern over the recent kidnapping of priests, worshippers, and students in parts of Nigeria and Cameroon.

Speaking during his address, Pope Leo said he was “deeply saddened” to learn of the growing number of attacks targeting churches, schools, and religious communities.

He noted that the kidnapping of young people and clergy not only endangers lives but strikes at the heart of institutions meant to provide refuge and guidance.

“I feel great pain, especially for the many young men and women who have been abducted, and for their distressed families. I make a heartfelt appeal for the immediate release of the hostages and urge the authorities to take appropriate and timely action to secure their freedom.” he said.

The Pope’s message comes at a time when many regions in West and Central Africa continue to grapple with rising insecurity, banditry, and insurgent activities.

Pope Leo called on governments, security agencies, authorities to intensify efforts to protect civilians, especially vulnerable groups like students and religious workers.

He also encouraged the global Christian community to unite in prayer for the victims, adding:

“Let us pray for our brothers and sisters, and that churches and schools may always and everywhere remain places of safety and hope.”

As families await developments, the Pope’s message has brought renewed attention to the urgent need for stronger security measures and humanitarian support in affected regions.
