‎Edo: Police arrest TikToker for ‘staging kidnapping to gain followers’

‎The Edo state Police Command has arrested a TikTok content creator, Osarobo Omoyemen, for allegedly staging a fake kidnapping incident to gain online attention and attract followers to her social media page.

‎Spokesman for the Command, SP Moses Joel Yamu, disclosed this in a statement on Saturday, describing the content creator’s action as not only misleading but capable of inciting hostility against the Police, thereby generating unnecessary tension within the state.

‎Yamu said the suspect, popularly known as “Madam Oil Rice,” had circulated a viral video claiming she was abducted along Upper Sakponba Road in Benin City and later rescued by Police operatives, who she further alleged detained her at Akpata Police Station and collected ₦10,000 as bail.

‎According to him, the Command immediately launched an investigation into the claims.

‎“Findings revealed that the entire story was completely fabricated and deliberate,” Yamu stated.

‎The police spokesman added that during interrogation, the 24-year-old suspect confessed to staging the incident solely to generate online content and attract followers.

‎”Investigators also discovered that she deleted an earlier video in which an accomplice could be heard urging viewers to follow her page, clearly exposing the motive behind the false alarm.

‎“The suspect has been identified, arrested, and charged to court on Thursday, 20th November 2025, for prosecution,” Yamu said.

‎Yamu further noted that efforts are ongoing to apprehend her accomplices so they can face the full weight of the law.

‎He emphasised that the police action is intended to serve as a strong deterrent to others who may attempt to misuse social media to create panic or disturb public peace.

‎“The Edo State Police Command strongly warns against the creation and circulation of fake news capable of disturbing the peace and security of the state,” he said.

‎Yamu urged members of the public to verify information before sharing and to refrain from acts that could mislead the public or undermine the efforts of security agencies.

‎“The Command remains committed to ensuring the safety, peace, and security of all residents of Edo State,” he added.
