Rivers United suffered a disappointing start to their CAF Champions League group campaign, falling 3–0 to defending champions Pyramids FC in Cairo on Saturday.

Egyptian striker Ahmed Atef was the difference-maker, scoring all three goals for the hosts.

Despite a disciplined first-half performance that restricted Pyramids FC to minimal chances, Rivers United lost their grip after the break.

Atef opened the scoring in the 52nd minute, doubled the advantage five minutes later, and completed his hat-trick in the 72nd minute to wrap up a convincing win.

Rivers United will look to respond when they face Morocco’s RS Berkane in Uyo next Friday for their second group fixture.
