Manchester City missed the chance to close the gap on Premier League leaders Arsenal after falling 2-1 to Newcastle United at St James’ Park on Saturday.

Pep Guardiola’s side would have moved to within a point of the Gunners with a win, but they were left to rue a series of wasted opportunities in a dominant first half.

Despite missing earlier chances, Harvey Barnes put Newcastle ahead as the hosts grew into the game. City responded swiftly, levelling just three minutes later when Ruben Dias’ effort deflected past the goalkeeper.

Newcastle, however, reclaimed the lead through Barnes once again, the forward bundling in from close range to secure a crucial victory in front of an electrified home crowd.

City pushed for an equaliser but were unable to find a breakthrough, leaving their title pursuit stalled.
