Former Barcelona defender Jordi Alba has shut down the growing comparisons between Lionel Messi and emerging Blaugrana sensation Lamine Yamal, insisting the duo are operating on completely different levels.
Lamine, widely regarded as Barcelona’s long-term successor to Messi, has drawn global attention for his standout performances.
At just 18, the Spanish winger is already viewed as one of the best young players in world football and has been tipped to become a future club icon.

Expectations rise as Lamine takes the No.10 shirt
This past summer, Lamine inherited Barcelona’s iconic No.10 shirt, previously worn by Messi, a symbolic move that intensified the narrative surrounding his development.
With exceptional dribbling, creativity and the capacity for spectacular moments, the youngster has naturally drawn comparisons to the Argentine legend.
Alba: “There Is no possible comparison”
Jordi Alba, however, is not buying into the hype. Speaking to El Larguero (via Diario Sport), the ex-Barcelona full-back, who spent the best years of his career playing alongside Messi in both La Liga and MLS, was unequivocal:
“Comparing Lamine with Leo… There is no possible comparison. Leo Messi has no rival in my opinion.”
Alba’s remarks cap a growing sentiment within the club’s old guard — Lamine may be a generational talent, but Messi’s legacy remains unmatched.
