Dig Usman Alkali Baba (born March 1, 1963) was the 21st Nigerian Inspector General of Police. He was nominated by President Muhammadu Buhari to replace Mohammed Adamu, who retired from the Nigeria Police Force in February 2021. On Friday, June 4, 2021, the Police Council confirmed Alkali Usman Baba’s appointment as substantive Inspector General of Police.

Alkali is from Geidam in Yobe State, Nigeria. In 1980, he earned a Teacher’s Grade II Certificate from Teachers College in Potiskum, Yobe State. He studied political science at Bayero University Kano, graduating in 1985, before going on to the University of Maiduguri, where he earned a master’s degree in public administration in 1997. Baba participated in the National Defence College’s course 22/2014 2014.
Career
Alkali joined the Nigeria Police Force on March 15, 1988, and rose to the rank of assistant superintendent before being promoted to commissioner of police on January 27, 2013. In 2014, he was appointed Commissioner of Police for Delta State.
He worked as DIG Force CID and force secretary at the force headquarters in Abuja, Nigeria. He was the deputy commissioner of investigations for the FCT and a directing staff member at the staff college. He has also worked in Kaduna as a deputy commissioner, administration, and assistant commissioner, CID. He held the position of area commander at Ilorin.
In Ebonyi State, he was the second in command. He worked as a divisional police officer (DPO) in Kaduna, Yola, Jos, and Gombe states. Baba previously served as the Assistant Inspector-General of Police for Zone 5, which included Edo, Delta, and Bayelsa states. Baba is a fellow of the International War College and a member of the International Association of Police.
On April 6, 2021, President Muhammadu Buhari appointed Baba to replace Mohammed Adamu, who retired from the Nigeria Police Force in February 2021. He was previously a deputy inspector-general of police, Force Criminal Investigation Department, and Force Headquarters.
Awards
President Muhammadu Buhari bestowed the Nigerian national title of Commander of the Order of the Federal Republic (CFR) upon him in October 2022.
