The Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC), Prof. Abdullahi Yusuf Ribadu, on Thursday formally received a comprehensive investigative report exposing widespread misuse and abuse of honorary doctorate degrees by recipients and some Nigerian universities.
The report, submitted by a special committee constituted by the NUC, is the culmination of several months of intensive investigation into the alarming proliferation of honorary degrees and their unethical exploitation.
Key findings highlight two major concerns:
Indiscriminate conferment of honorary doctorates by certain institutions, often influenced by financial inducements, political patronage, or personal connections rather than genuine merit or exceptional contribution to society.
Blatant public misuse of the title “Dr” by recipients who have never earned an academic doctorate (PhD) from any accredited university, using the prefix primarily for self-aggrandizement, social status, business advantage, or political leverage.
The committee’s submission has intensified calls for stricter regulations and sanctions to restore the dignity and integrity of honorary degrees in Nigeria’s tertiary education system.
The NUC is expected to make the full report public and announce policy measures in the coming weeks.
