Burna Boy, the Grammy-winning artiste, has launched a fierce
defense of his character and actions following a viral incident at his concert
in Colorado, where he ejected a couple for sleeping during his performance.
The controversy began when a clip from the show circulated
online, capturing the moment Burna Boy stopped his performance to address the
lovebirds.
“I see you over there with your girl sleeping. This is where
you f**k off. Take her home. I am not doing any more song until you take her
home. Real life. Cannot be taking this f**king p**s bro. Hurry up,” he said.
The lovers were subsequently seen leaving the auditorium to
a mixed reaction of boos and cheers from the crowd.
The incident sparked widespread discussion, which
intensified after an Instagram live session where Burna Boy stated he only
wants supporters who buy his tickets.
“Did I tell you to be my fan? I am only looking for money.
This period is a treacherous period,” he said.

In a series of now-deleted Instagram posts, the singer
expanded on his position, claiming there is a “long-time public agenda against
me”.
He defended ejecting the fans, likening it to removing a
passenger from a flight or a student being sent out of a classroom for
disruptive behaviour.

— “I was joking around with my band about something else, y’all have spun it as usual saying “Burna Boy doesn’t love his fans” if you hate me so much either kill me or leave me alone… free Sudan, free Congo, free Nigeria.” pic.twitter.com/7pJ1Tt9esm

At the heart of his argument was the intensity he brings to
his craft. “I leave my soul on every stage I get on,” Burna Boy wrote.
He expressed strong disapproval of being treated like mere
entertainment, stating he would “gladly be cancelled if we are now in a world
where you can treat me like a stripper, slap my a** and tell me to keep dancing
cuz you throw $100 at me”.
He also pushed back against the narrative that he dislikes
his fans, clarifying that he was misquoted from his live video and that his “I
am only looking for money” comment was made in jest.
“I love who loves me and respect who respects me,” he
asserted.
The singer said he has built a mental block that prevents
public tantrums from getting to him.
While standing by his feelings on the incident, Burna Boy
offered a conditional apology, acknowledging his humanity.
He concluded by criticising the public for what he sees as a
biased focus on his controversies.
“I sincerely apologize if I’m wrong, I’m not always right
but I feel right about this. Anyway I’m just human so f**k me,” he wrote.
“They never post any of the good I do in this world, but
they go wild and viral when they feel I’ve finally “fu***d up”.
“I’ve seen people who NEVER even acknowledged my existence
before now posting how “This is Not cool” or writing think pieces on me now.”
