A fresh twist emerged on Tuesday in the ongoing N4.6 billion money laundering trial linked to the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) as an EFCC investigator told the FCT High Court that security funds meant for the purchase of military equipment were diverted to finance pilgrimage to Makkah, PDP political rallies, and the 2015 presidential election campaign.
Kazeem Yusuf, an operative of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the second prosecution witness (PW2), gave the testimony before Justice Yusuf Halilu in the case involving former National Security Adviser Col. Sambo Dasuki (retd), ex-Minister of State for Finance Ambassador Bashir Yuguda, former Sokoto State Governor Attahiru Bafarawa, his son Sagir Attahiru, and their company, Dalhatu Investment Limited.
The defendants face an amended 25-count charge of criminal breach of trust, misappropriation, and receiving stolen property.
Led in evidence by lead prosecutor Rotimi Jacobs SAN, Yusuf told the court that investigations showed the contracts awarded by ONSA for security equipment were never executed, yet the N4.6 billion released was fully diverted.
“The contracts were supposedly for the supply of security equipment, but further investigation revealed that none was supplied and the entire money was diverted to other purposes,” Yusuf said.
He disclosed that when he interrogated the fourth defendant, Sagir Attahiru, the younger Bafarawa voluntarily submitted a list detailing how the funds were spent on, sponsorship of pilgrimage to Makkah, organising PDP rallies across the country, Payments to security agencies for election monitoring and funding of the 2015 presidential election and other political activities.
The witness also read from bank statements earlier admitted in evidence, revealing that hundreds of millions of naira were transferred to politically exposed individuals and entities.
Among the beneficiaries was the Sheikh AbdurRahman Al-Sudais Foundation, chaired by former Governor Attahiru Bafarawa, which received N500 million.
Another N580 million was traced to a company linked to Abdallah Wali, the PDP governorship candidate in Sokoto State during the 2015 elections.
At the conclusion of Yusuf’s testimony, the court, on the agreement of all parties, adjourned the matter to 9 and 10 December 2025 for cross-examination of the witness by defence counsel.
