Kogi State’s political dynamics received a major jolt as former Governor Capt. Idris Ichalla Wada officially joined the All Progressives Congress (APC), signaling a bold realignment ahead of the 2027 elections. The event, held in Odu, Dekina Local Government Area, was attended by Vice President Kashim Shettima, APC National Chairman Professor Nentawe Yilwatda, Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo, and other top dignitaries, highlighting its significance.
Former Senator Abubakar Sadiku Ohere lauded Wada’s defection, describing it as a “strategic and unifying move that strengthens APC’s leadership and development agenda in Kogi State.” He emphasized that such political realignments foster collaboration among experienced leaders committed to progress.
Other prominent defectors included former SDP Deputy Governorship candidate Hon. Sam Abenemi, former Deputy Speaker of the Kogi State House of Assembly Hon. Emmanuel Omebije, and former Ibaji Local Government Chairman Hon. Abraham Uchola, accompanied by thousands of supporters. Political observers argue that these defections consolidate APC’s influence in Kogi East and position the party strongly ahead of 2027.
Ohere spoke to journalists about his impact during his short Senate tenure, where he served as Chairman of the Committee on Local Content and a member of the Works and Health Committees. He sponsored motions to revive the Ajaokuta Steel Company, increase local participation in the oil and gas sector, and championed industrialization, job creation, and transparent governance.
In addition to his legislative work, Ohere’s tenure in the State Cabinet demonstrates his capacity for effective leadership. As Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, he resolved protracted chieftaincy disputes, strengthened local governance, and empowered royal institutions. As Commissioner for Works, he oversaw infrastructure development including roads, bridges, and drainage systems, and played a key role in establishing the Reference Hospital, Okene, and upgrading the Confluence University of Science and Technology, Osara.
Ohere also implemented constituency empowerment initiatives, including vocational training, agricultural support, installation of motorized boreholes, and financial aid for market traders and small businesses. Analysts believe his legislative and administrative experience combined with grassroots engagement gives him a strong advantage for a Senate comeback in 2027.
“Our people deserve leaders who focus on development, deliver tangible results, and transform communities,” Ohere said. “Kogi Central must elect leaders who make a real difference in 2027.”
