Fire service warns traders against fire safety violations amid dry season risks

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Federal Fire Service (FFS) has intensified fire safety awareness among traders at the Kugbo Timber Market, urging them to adopt preventive measures to avert fire outbreaks.

On Wednesday, the FCT FFS Fire Inspection, Investigation, and Enforcement (IIE) unit conducted a training session for traders following an inspection of the market.

The initiative comes amid rising concerns over fire incidents during the dry harmattan season.

Chinweuba Akam, head of the IIE unit, explained that the training was timely given the season and the combustible nature of materials sold at the market.

“As you know, the harmattan season is characterised by fire incidents, and that’s why we have chosen this period to inform traders so that they can be prepared to avoid loss or minimise damage if it occurs,” Akam said.

He noted that most of the items sold in the market, including timber, sawdust, fabrics, and other solid materials, fall under Class A fire materials, which are highly flammable.

The training also covered the correct use of different types of fire extinguishers, equipping traders with practical knowledge to tackle potential fires effectively.

Following a survey of the market, Akam revealed that the service plans to map out strategic points for installing firefighting equipment and recommend suitable devices for traders.

“The unit, being responsible for fire safety education and enforcement, will continue to sensitise and inspect traders to ensure compliance.

“If anyone is found defying fire safety regulations, we will compel them to take the necessary action”, Akam added.
