Tinubu Postpones G20, AU-EU Trips Amid Kidnappings, Church Attack

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has suspended his planned foreign trips to prioritize national security concerns, postponing attendance at the 20th G20 Summit in Johannesburg, South Africa, and the 7th AU-EU Summit in Luanda, Angola.

The decision comes in the wake of the abduction of 24 schoolgirls in Kebbi State and a deadly bandit attack on worshippers at the Christ Apostolic Church in Eruku, Kwara State, which claimed lives on Monday.

A State House statement issued by Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, revealed that the president chose to remain in Abuja to receive further briefings on the incidents before departing.

“He now awaits reports from Vice President Kashim Shettima, who paid a sympathy visit to Kebbi on his behalf, as well as reports from the police and the Department of State Services regarding the attack in Kwara,” the statement noted.

In a direct response to a request from Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, President Tinubu has ordered the immediate deployment of additional military and police personnel to Eruku and the broader Ekiti Local Government Area.

The president further directed security agencies to intensify efforts against the perpetrators, emphasizing a swift pursuit of the bandits responsible for the church assault.

Tinubu reiterated his unwavering commitment to the safe rescue of the kidnapped Kebbi schoolgirls, instructing all relevant agencies to “do everything possible” to secure their release and return them home unharmed.

The postponement underscores the administration’s focus on addressing escalating insecurity, with officials assuring the public of coordinated actions to restore peace in affected regions.
