Heavily armed police and Department of State Services (DSS) personnel have been deployed to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) national secretariat, Legacy House, in Abuja on Tuesday morning to prevent a breakdown of law and order.
The massive security presence follows simultaneous notices by two rival factions of the party scheduling separate meetings at the same venue today, raising fears of a physical confrontation.
Sources within the party confirmed that the Ambassador Iliya Damagum-led National Working Committee (NWC) had fixed its own meeting for 10 a.m., while supporters of the suspended National Chairman, Senator Iyorchia Ayu, and some governors loyal to the Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara faction scheduled a parallel gathering at the same time and location.
Armed operatives in over a dozen patrol vehicles, including anti-riot units, have sealed off approaches to the secretariat located on Maitama District.
Party officials and members are being subjected to strict identification checks before being allowed entry.
As at 9:30 a.m., no senior member of either faction had arrived, but tension remains high as both camps insist their meeting will proceed as planned.
The PDP has been enmeshed in a protracted leadership crisis since April 2024 when the NWC suspended Ayu and appointed Damagum as acting chairman, a development rejected by a section of the party.
Party stakeholders are watching to see whether today’s standoff will escalate or be resolved through last-minute intervention by elders and governors.
