I’ll Support ADC Aspirant That Emerges Presidential Candidate

Former Vice President, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, has pledged to support whoever emerges as the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate in 2026.

He said it would not matter whether he secures the party’s ticket or not.

Atiku made the declaration during the welcome ceremony of new defectors to the coalition party in Lagos State on Saturday.

The event saw top members of the ADC and the Labour Party (LP) officially joining the ADC.

The defectors were welcomed by the National Secretary, Rauf Aregbesola; Senator Kolawole Ogunwale; and the State ADC Chairman, Mr. George Ashiru.

Atiku, represented by Prof. Ola Olateju, served as the guest speaker.

Speaking on the party’s upcoming presidential primary, Atiku said, “It is not a thing we can predetermine. Whoever emerges through free and fair contests, we are all going to support.”

He added that all aspirants would have equal opportunities to contest, stressing, “We are not imposing anyone on the people.

“The door is open to everyone who wants to contest.”

Atiku emphasised the importance of inclusivity, noting that the winner of the ADC primary would represent all Nigerians in the general election.

He further assured party members of his loyalty, saying, “My ambition will never be greater than the unity and progress of our party.”

Currently, the three frontrunners for the ADC presidential ticket include former governors, presidential aspirants, and candidates Chibuike Amaechi, Peter Obi, and Atiku Abubakar himself.

The former Vice President’s statement comes amid growing interest in coalition politics, as major political figures reposition themselves ahead of the 2027 elections.

His endorsement of a transparent primary underscores the party’s commitment to democratic processes and fair competition.

Atiku concluded, “We must ensure that all aspirants are given a level playing field. The party belongs to the people, and the people will decide.”
