Turaki, Arapaja, emerge PDP chairman, secretary at party convention in Ibadan



Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) and former Minister of Special Duties and Intergovernmental Affairs, has been elected as new National Chairman of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

Also, Taofeek Arapaja was elected as National Secretary at the elective national convention of the umbrella party held at the Lekan Salami Stadium, Adamasingba, Ibadan at the early hours of Sunday.

Ben Obi, overseeing the electoral processes, guided delegates through a transparent voting mechanism that underscored the PDP’s commitment to democratic principles.

Turaki’s eergence was almost unanimous after Yakubu Lado, his closest rival, stepped down from the contest, paving the way for Turaki to become the consensus choice for the party’s top job.

The new chairman secured the position with a total of 1,516 votes, surpassing Senator Lado, who received 275 votes.

The convention, which drew more than 3,000 delegates from all 36 States and the Federal Capital Territory, was described as a turning point in the opposition party’s renewed bid for unity ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The move by PDP is fresh opportunity to rebuild, reposition, and effectively challenge the ruling party in 2027. Similarly at the convention Governor Seyi Makinde moved a motion for the ratification and confirmation of Executive Committees and Structures in States, which were produced through congresses at all levels that were in compliance with the party’s Constitution and monitored by INEC and security agencies, exempting Imo, Abia, Enugu and Rivers states. Daniel Obiechina Okechukwu seconded the motion.

The convention also moved a motion to dissolve the current NWC of the party, while it equally amended some sections of the party’s constitution.
