A nutrition advocate and Founder of Smokeyhut Delights, Damilola Esther Alabi, has urged the Federal Government to intensify awareness campaigns on the health benefits of indigenous foods, particularly Ofada rice, which she described as highly beneficial for people managing diabetes.

Alabi made the call in Abuja during the Ofada Renaissance Experience, themed “An Experience in Culinary and Cultural Affairs.” She stressed that promoting local dishes would not only improve public health but also help revive cultural values and reduce dependence on imported food.

According to her, Ofada rice stands out for its nutritional richness and medicinal value, especially for diabetic patients.

She explained that the locally grown rice contains essential nutrients that support better blood sugar regulation compared to most foreign rice varieties.

“It is healthy, beneficial and often recommended for people treating illnesses related to diabetes. For some, it is more like medicine,” she said.

The food entrepreneur added that supporting local dishes such as Ofada rice would also help strengthen unity across different tribes, as food remains a powerful cultural connector.

“This event represents a tradition that originated from Ogun State. Ofada brings people of diverse backgrounds together. It promotes unity, culture and healthier eating habits,” she said.

She also urged younger generations to appreciate and embrace local foods. According to her, replacing imported foods with traditional meals would boost Nigeria’s economy and preserve cultural identity.

On the processing of Ofada rice, Alabi noted that although it is produced locally, modern machines are used to de-stone it, followed by manual sorting to ensure it is clean and safe for consumption.

Also speaking, the convener of the Ofada City Tour, Chef Fapohunda Matilda, said her passion for Ofada rice inspired the Renaissance Experience. She emphasised that Ofada rice deserved to be at the centre of Nigeria’s culinary identity due to its superior nutritional benefits.

“Ofada rice is far healthier than the foreign rice many people consider premium. If we don’t appreciate what we have, outsiders will come, tap into it and elevate it beyond us,” she said.

Matilda said she was committed to putting Ofada rice on the global map and showcasing its cultural and economic value.

Both speakers called for stronger government support to promote indigenous foods, strengthen local farmers and create a deeper appreciation of Nigeria’s culinary heritage.
