The Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) has inducted 150 fresh medical graduates of the University of Ilorin into the medical profession.
With this figure, the university of Ilorin has produced 5,082 medical doctors since the establishment of its College of Health Sciences in1977,according to the vice chancellor, Professor Wahab Egbewole (SAN).
Speaking at the 40th induction and initiation ceremony of the college of health sciences held at the university’s auditorium, Friday, Egbewole admonished the new doctors to always show “empathy and compassion” in the cause of discharging their duties.
Coinciding with the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the university, the vice chancellor described the young doctors as “golden set” as the college for the first time since its establishment produced 50 outstanding graduates who bagged distinctions out the 150 graduands.
Speaking shortly before administering the oath on the new doctors, MDCN Registrar, Dr. Fatima Kyari, stated that only those who registered and are licensed with the council have the legal right to practice in Nigeria, notwithstanding bagging MBBS certificates.
Represented by the deputy registrar of the council, Dr Enejo Abdul, Kyari cautioned the inductees against unethical practices, warning that anyone found wanting would risk the revocation of his or her licences.
She said: “The medical profession is highly regulated,” not just because of limited available training facilities, but also to ensure that only those who can abide by the ethics of the procession in line with global standard best practices are produced.
