The Senator representing Abia North, Orji Uzor Kalu, has cautioned against the practice of overlocking senior military officers and picking their juniors in the appointment of service chiefs.

Kalu, who spoke on Thursday while contributing to a debate on “A Bill for an Act to Repeal the Armed Forces Act and to Re-enact a modern, constitutionally compliant and operationally responsive legal framework for the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and for related matters, 2025,” directed his comments to the President and Commander-in-Chief.

Naija News reports that President Bola Tinubu currently occupies the position in Nigeria and recently oversaw the sack and appointment of new service chiefs in the country.

In his submission, Kalu observed that appointing juniors as military chiefs over seniors in service, not only dampens the morale of the senior officers, but also results in the wastage of human and material resources which had been invested in the training of these senior officers, who are inadvertently forced to retire.

Specifically, the Abia senator faulted the recent trend in the appointments of the Chief of Army Staff, the Chief of Naval Staff and the Chief of Air Staff.

The House of Representatives has called on the Federal Government to immediately suspend the West African Examinations Council’s (WAEC) plan to introduce Computer-Based Testing (CBT) for the 2026 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), warning that the move could trigger mass academic failure, psychological trauma, and even student fatalities.

The resolution followed the adoption of a motion of urgent public importance sponsored by Hon. Kelechi Nworgu during Thursday’s plenary.

While presenting the motion, Nworgu acknowledged that computer-based testing has worked effectively for the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), but stressed that the realities in Nigerian secondary schools make the transition unrealistic for WAEC examinations.

He noted that the majority of schools lack the infrastructure and manpower needed to support such a major shift in assessment.

Following deliberations, the House directed WAEC and the Federal Ministry of Education to immediately suspend the planned CBT implementation.

It also urged the Federal Government to allocate funds in the 2026 budget for hiring qualified computer teachers, constructing computer laboratories equipped with internet access, and installing standby generators in schools nationwide.

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has dispelled any claims of a misunderstanding between himself and the Nigerian military.

According to Wike, who spoke with newsmen in Abuja on Thursday, he has no problem and would never have a problem with the military.

His comments follow the altercation between him and an officer of the Nigerian Navy on Tuesday over the legality of an ongoing development of a land in Abuja, which has since snowballed into a matter of national discourse.

However, in his chat with newsmen on Thursday, the FCT Minister stated that claims in certain quarters about a fallout between him and the Nigerian military are false, mischievous, and unfounded.

He submitted that the Armed Forces is an institution he has utmost respect for, adding that his administration has remained steadfast in supporting military operations within the FCT and across Nigeria.

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has condemned the Federal Government’s fresh approval of ₦1.15 trillion in domestic borrowing, accusing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of policy inconsistency and fiscal recklessness.

In a statement to Naija News on Thursday signed by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC noted that despite Tinubu’s public claim that Nigeria had met its non-oil revenue targets, reportedly N20.59 trillion by August 2025, the administration continues to deepen the country’s debt crisis.

Citing a report that Nigeria’s total public debt could rise to N193 trillion if all of Tinubu’s 2025 loan requests are approved, the party said the government was “borrowing against its own words” and failing to deliver meaningful relief to Nigerians still burdened by inflation and rising living costs.

A mild drama unfolded on Thursday at the House of Representatives after the Speaker, Tajudeen Abbas, cautioned a member for openly faulting lawmakers’ conduct during plenary.

Ifeanyi Uzokwe, representing Nnewi North/Nnewi South/Ekwusigo Federal Constituency of Anambra State, had raised a point of order to lament what he described as the growing lack of decorum among lawmakers.

Uzokwe said, “Every day we come here, Mr Speaker, we receive our children and visitors in the gallery.

“They are here to see how we conduct ourselves and learn from us. But most times, what we display here is not what they should see as an example of parliamentarians.”

While Uzokwe was still expressing concerns, Speaker Abbas swiftly interjected, warning that such matters should not be raised publicly.

The Speaker said, “If what we are going to discuss pertains to this chamber, we can do it in an executive session.”

The Senate has taken steps to prohibit the enlistment of persons below 18 years into the Nigerian Armed Forces, as it passed the Armed Forces (Repeal and Re-enactment) Bill, 2025, for second reading.

Naija News reports that the bill seeks to outlaw the recruitment of minors and align the country’s military laws with the Child Rights Act, 2003, as well as international conventions such as the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child and the African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child.

Sponsored by Senator Abdulaziz Yar’Adua (Katsina Central), the proposed legislation aims to repeal the current Armed Forces Act, 2004, and replace it with a modern, constitutionally compliant framework that better responds to contemporary security demands.

Leading the debate on the floor of the Senate, Yar’Adua said the reform was overdue, stressing that the existing law, originally derived from a military decree, no longer reflects democratic principles or present-day operational realities.

The proposed law introduces far-reaching reforms intended to strengthen discipline, accountability, and fairness within the Armed Forces.
