The Federal Government has tasked advertising and communication experts with leading efforts to reshape Nigeria’s global and domestic image by amplifying the nation’s strengths, combating misinformation, and promoting unity and opportunity.
Speaking at the 5th National Advertising Conference on Thursday in Abuja, Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, described the sector as a vital tool for nation-building and public perception.
He singled out the false narrative labeling Nigeria a “violator of religious freedom” as a major challenge, stressing that terrorism and banditry affect all Nigerians regardless of faith or ethnicity.
“Nigeria remains a beacon of religious tolerance. Security threats target our collective peace, not any religion,” Idris said, citing recent gains reported by the Chief of Army Staff following a briefing with President Bola Tinubu.
Idris called for a “communication renaissance” driven by facts, digital campaigns, and authentic storytelling to drown out propaganda.
“You are custodians of national perception. Truth must travel faster than falsehood,” he told attendees.
ARCON Director General Dr. Olalekan Fadolapo opened the event, noting that effective communication is key to navigating economic shifts and digital disruption.
The Minister pledged closer collaboration with ARCON to modernize public information systems and empower professionals to tell Nigeria’s story accurately.
