The First Lady of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Sen. Oluremi Tinubu, has disbursed 10,000 modern sanitary pads to ten thousand secondary school girls in Zamfara state under the Renewed Hope Initiative.
Speaking during the distribution, held at Government Girls Day Secondary School, Gusau, Sen. Tinubu said each beneficiary will receive one-year supply of the pads.
She was represented by the wife of Zamfara state governor, Hajiya Huriyya Dauda Lawal, who stated that the gesture will reach 3,70,000 school girls in rural communities across the nation at the end of the programme.
The First Lady stated that the Renewed Hope Initiative “Flow with Confidence” is a vital menstrual health intervention, designed to empower precious school girls by promoting knowledge, dignity and confidence through improved menstrual hygiene in Zamfara state.
Sen. Tinubu said all states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) will receive 10,000 packs each with a view to support girls in rural communities and those who are unable to afford sanitary pads.
She added that the disposable sanitary pads will offer a simple, hygienic option with health benefits for a woman’s reproductive well-being.
“At the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI), we believe that no girl should ever have to choose between her dignity and her education,” she said.
Huriyya Lawal also appealed to 14 chairmen of
local government areas in the state to give their critical position as the arm of government closest to the people in delivering essential services.
“It is crucial that you take ownership of this intervention, scale-up and ensure these supplies get directly to deserving girls in our rural communities.
“The Renewed Hope Initiative spent a total of two billion naira to procure these customised disposable sanitary pads and it is free of charge,” she said.
