FG unveils AI-powered WhatsApp chatbot for youth employment and mentorship

The Federal Government has unveiled an AI-powered WhatsApp chatbot to provide real-time support and guidance for Nigerian youths to essential social resources. The initiative is designed to reach one million young Nigerians annually.

The digital innovation is championed by the Federal Ministry of Youth Development, under the leadership of the Honourable Minister of Youth Development, Comrade Ayodele Olawande Wisdom. The move is tagged as a step in the youth empowerment scheme and digital inclusion.

The initiative, developed in partnership with the Office of the Special Assistant to the President on Digital Innovation, reaffirms the Federal Government’s commitment to delivering hope, trust, and inclusion through technology.

“It is a forward-thinking intervention that ensures every young Nigerian has real-time access to credible information, mentorship, and opportunities capable of transforming their future,” the minister said.

He noted that there will be an upcoming Stakeholders’ Engagement and Demonstration Forum that will formally unveil the chatbot’s operational framework. The event will include a live demonstration of the WhatsApp AI Chatbot interface, a presentation of the Help Desk’s vision, mission, and structure, as well as stakeholder feedback.

The project also aligns with the federal government’s broad mission in using technology to tackle youth-centred challenges such as unemployment and limited access to accurate information.

The Minister noted that the AI-backed WhatsApp chatbot is a landmark phase of digital engagement between the government and young Nigerians. The focus is on promoting greater participation from youth and increasing trust in public institutions.

Our goal is to restore hope among young people by showing that the government can deliver support, opportunities and credible information through technology-driven systems,” Olawande noted.

Speaking ahead of the event, Honourable Minister Comrade Ayodele Olawande Wisdom reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to deploying innovative digital tools to address the challenges faced by young Nigerians, including employment, mental health, civic engagement, and entrepreneurship.

How the WhatsApp chatbot will possibly work

According to the ministry, the WhatsApp chatbot will offer instant access to verified information such as employment opportunities, entrepreneurship, mental health support, civic engagement and mentorship programmes. The tool is tagged as a digital lifeline for youths to critically engage government agencies.

While the Ministry is yet to reveal how the WhatsApp Chatbot will work or when it will be available for public usage, a case study form similar chatbots presents a projected style.

The AI-enabled WhatsApp chatbot knowledge base will likely be specifically trained on government data, ensuring accuracy and relevance to public services.

Once a user prompts the chatbot and imitates a conversation, the system will search a curated knowledge base of government documents, policies, and program details to find the relevant information. The WhatsApp chatbot then generates a response and potentially guides the user through the next steps directly within the WhatsApp chat interface.

For the federal government, the goal is to create a user-friendly interface for various government services by reducing the need for youths to navigate complex websites or visit multiple physical offices. It’s also a medium to digitally include youths in a widely used social media platform.
