Former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has condemned the recent public altercation between FCT Minister Nyesom Wike and a naval officer, describing it as a “national embarrassment” that exposes deepening disorder in Nigeria’s institutions.
In a statement titled “Wike versus Naval Officer: A Lesson for National Reflection,” Obi argued that the incident stemming from what should have been a routine civic matter—highlights systemic failures in governance, protocol, and respect for due process.
“What should ordinarily be a routine civic encounter has, once again, become a national embarrassment a typical example coming out of a ‘disgraced country’,” Obi wrote.
He posed a series of pointed questions: Should the military be deployed for purely civil operations? Should ministers intervene in security matters without decorum? Are there no clear boundaries between administrative authority and the duties of security agencies?
Obi further questioned why uniformed personnel are frequently drawn into civilian disputes, why due process has been replaced by public confrontation, and what example such incidents set for Nigeria’s youth regarding leadership and the rule of law.
“These are not just questions about one incident—they go to the very heart of how our nation is governed,” he stated.
“When public officials act beyond institutional norms, and when security agencies are used in ways that blur their professional boundaries, we weaken both governance and public trust.”
Calling for national reform, Obi urged the rebuilding of institutions stronger than individuals, where public office is exercised with humility and where the dignity of uniformed officers and citizens’ rights are upheld.
He reiterated his long-held view that titles like “His Excellency,” “Distinguished,” or “Honourable” must be earned through exemplary conduct both in and out of office.”
“A country that aspires to greatness… must replace the culture of impunity with the discipline of law, order, and respect for due process,” Obi concluded
