Chelsea’s Trevoh Chalobah and Manchester City’s James Trafford have been drafted into the England squad after Newcastle United’s Anthony Gordon and Nick Pope were ruled out due to injury.
The Football Association confirmed the update on Tuesday, saying Gordon withdrew with a hip issue while Pope was sidelined following a concussion.
“Chelsea’s Trevoh Chalobah and Manchester City’s James Trafford have been added to the England squad. This follows the withdrawal of Newcastle United duo Anthony Gordon and Nick Pope through injury and concussion respectively,” the FA statement read.
Crystal Palace defender Marc Guéhi has also linked up with the national team despite a minor foot problem sustained during his club’s European clash with AZ Alkmaar. The FA said he “will continue to be assessed in the coming days.”
The Three Lions are currently based at Tottenham Hotspur’s training ground as they step up preparations for Thursday’s World Cup qualifier against Serbia at Wembley, before facing Albania away on Sunday. England have already sealed qualification for next summer’s tournament.
Chalobah’s recall marks a significant moment for the 26-year-old, who made his England debut in May against Senegal but missed recent squads. The Chelsea defender has been in solid form this season, appearing in all but four matches for the club. The Blues sit third in the Premier League and are still active in both the Carabao Cup and Champions League.
Manager Thomas Tuchel, who first handed Chalobah his Chelsea debut in 2021, has often spoken highly of his discipline and consistency. The defender will now look to cement his place in the national setup.
