The Deputy Speaker of the Kebbi State House of Assembly, Muhammad Sama’ila Bagudo, has been released unharmed after being abducted by suspected Lakurawa bandits in his hometown.
The Kebbi State Police Command confirmed the breakthrough in a statement on Sunday, with Public Relations Officer CSP Nafiu Abubakar revealing that Bagudo, 60, received medical attention before being reunited with his family.
The Command hailed the “courage, resilience, and bravery” of the joint security team comprising police, military, and vigilantes that launched a massive manhunt following the October 31, 2025, kidnapping.
Police expressed deep gratitude to Kebbi residents for their “vital and accurate information,” which proved crucial to the successful rescue.
The assault occurred around 8:20 p.m. in Bagudo town, headquarters of Bagudo Local Government Area, moments after Bagudo observed Isha’i prayers.
Armed assailants stormed the area, seizing the APC lawmaker representing Bagudo East Constituency and vanishing into the night, heightening fears in the bandit-plagued Northwest region.
CSP Abubakar reaffirmed the Command’s “sustained onslaught against banditry, kidnapping, and other violent crimes,” urging citizens to stay vigilant and report suspicious activities promptly.
Bagudo’s release came just a day after an interfaith prayer gathering in Birnin Kebbi, where Muslims and Christians united in pleas for divine intervention against the state’s escalating insecurity.
Governor Nasir Idris had used the event to warn politicians against exploiting the crisis for partisan gain.
