Sunderland late acrobatics halt Arsenal title charge

Brian Brobbey’s injury-time stunner denied Arsenal all three points as Sunderland fought back to earn a dramatic 2-2 draw at the Stadium of Light, ending the Gunners’ nine-game winning streak across all competitions.

Ballard haunts former club

Former Arsenal defender Dan Ballard opened the scoring for Sunderland, becoming the first player to breach Mikel Arteta’s backline in nearly ten matches.

The Northern Ireland international powered home after Arsenal failed to deal with a high ball from Nordi Mukiele.

Ballard’s night didn’t end there, he later provided the assist for Brobbey’s equaliser and capped a heroic performance with a late goal-saving block on Mikel Merino.

Arsenal hit back but fail to hold on

Despite a sluggish first half, Arsenal responded strongly after the break. Bukayo Saka levelled the score after being set up by Eberechi Eze, before Leandro Trossard fired home a thunderous strike from 20 yards to put the Gunners ahead.

As Arsenal looked set to grind out another hard-fought win, Sunderland had other plans as their stoppage time efforts paid off.

Brobbey showed sharp reactions, flicking the ball into the air before acrobatically lifting it over David Raya to secure a point for the hosts.

Gunners’ winning run ends

Arteta’s men were left frustrated after conceding in the final moments, particularly following a VAR check that upheld the equaliser.

The result leaves Arsenal’s title charge slightly dented, while Sunderland’s spirited display once again underlined their Premier League credentials.
