Matthijs de Ligt rescued a dramatic 2-2 draw for Manchester United against Tottenham Hotspur in a frantic finale at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday, denying Spurs a late comeback victory in the Premier League.
Spurs looked set for a sensational win after coming from behind in the closing stages. Mathys Tel equalised late before Richarlison headed in the 91st-minute goal, seemingly sealing three points for the hosts.
However, in the 96th minute, De Ligt rose at the back post to power in a header from a Bruno Fernandes corner, ensuring United extended their unbeaten run to five games.
Both teams now have 18 points from 11 matches, but goal difference leaves Spurs in third place and Manchester United in seventh. The Red Devils have now failed to beat Spurs in their previous eight encounters.
Earlier, Bryan Mbeumo, United’s £65 million signing from Brentford, put the visitors ahead in the 32nd minute, heading in from Amad Diallo’s cross and taking his tally to four goals in four games, after winning Premier League Player of the Month for October.
Tottenham, booed off after a 1-0 loss to Chelsea last weekend, revived their attacking threat in the second half. Substitute Destiny Udogie crossed for Mathys Tel, who scored via a deflection off De Ligt. Moments later, Richarlison curled in a shot from Wilson Odobert to give Spurs the seemingly decisive lead.
Despite the late surge, Spurs failed to secure their first home league win since the season opener, as De Ligt’s last-gasp header salvaged a point for United. The goal left the Tottenham fans frustrated and highlighted the resilience of Amorim’s side.
The draw maintains the tense competition for the top of the Premier League, as both sides continue their push for Champions League qualification while United seeks to improve consistency under Ruben Amorim.
