Okpebholo Calls For INEC Review As BVAS Causes Delay In Edo By-Election

Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, on Saturday, raised concerns over the slow performance of the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS).

The issues occurred during the ongoing by-election in Edo Central Senatorial District.

The governor made the statement while casting his vote at Ward 2 Polling Unit 1 in Udomi Primary School, Esan Central Local Government.

Speaking with journalists shortly after voting, Okpebholo said the exercise was peaceful but the BVAS machines deployed by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) caused unnecessary delays.

“Well, I just voted. You can see the frustration. The BVAS is just too slow.

“It takes too long before you can get accredited,” he stated.

“I think INEC needs to look into this. So far, so good, the reports I’m getting are good,” he added.

Despite the delay, the governor commended INEC for maintaining peace during the process. He encouraged residents to fully participate in the by-election and protect their votes.

“The process has been smooth here, and the reports I am getting from other areas in the district are also smooth INEC is doing well.

“I urge the voters to come out to vote and defend their votes,” Okpebholo advised.

He further stressed the importance of civic responsibility, saying, “Every vote counts. Citizens should not allow minor technical hitches to discourage them from exercising their democratic right.”

Okpebholo also warned against voter complacency: “We must remain vigilant. Ensure that your votes are properly cast and accounted for. Democracy is strengthened by active participation.”

He concluded, “I commend the security personnel deployed for their presence and professionalism.

“Their role ensures that voters feel safe to exercise their franchise without fear.”
