Troops foil kidnap plot, rescue 10 hostages in Benue


Troops of the Joint Task Force, Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS), successfully thwarted a kidnapping attempt and rescued ten hostages in Benue state on November3, 2025.

A statement Issued by Lieutenant Ahmad Zubairu, acting media information officer HQ JTF Operation Whirl Stroke, said while conducting a mobile patrol along the Zaki-Biam–Wukari road near Kyado, OPWS troops received credible intelligence about suspicious activities at a location known as the Quarantine Checkpoint.

He said armed kidnappers, reportedly disguised in police uniforms, were attempting to deceive and abduct unsuspecting travelers.

“Responding with urgency, the troops mobilised to the scene. Upon arrival, the kidnappers fled into nearby bushes, prompting a rapid pursuit,” he said.

He noted that the soldiers tracked the suspects deep into the forest, where they successfully rescued 10 kidnapped individuals.

“One of the rescued victims was Warrant Officer John Richard of the 6 Brigade Band, Jalingo.

“Two other individuals remain unaccounted for, and search operations are ongoing to locate them.

“The rescued hostages were placed in safe custody, debriefed, and handed over to appropriate authorities for further care and investigation,” he said.

Meanwhile, Major General Moses Gara, Force Commander of OPWS, praised the troops for their gallantry, swift response, and unwavering dedication to duty.

He also commended the tactical commander for exemplary leadership and proactive measures in combating criminal activities in the region.

General Gara reaffirmed the military’s commitment to rewarding the sacrifices of its personnel, urging continued vigilance, discipline, and professionalism in all operations.
