FCTA, youths launch clean air campaign in Abuja schools, markets

Young environmental advocates have taken the fight against air pollution to schools and markets across the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in support of government efforts to promote clean energy and protect public health.

The campaign, tagged Breathe Clean Air Abuja, is part of a public-private initiative under the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), led by Minister Nyesom Wike.

It aims to raise awareness about the dangers of using charcoal and firewood for cooking and encourage the adoption of gas stoves in over 5,000 households across the six area councils.

Members of the youth group visited major markets and schools in Abuja, distributing flyers, engaging students, and sensitizing traders on environmental protection and clean energy practices.

Speaking at the event, the Mandate Secretary of the FCTA Health Services and Environment Secretariat, Dr. Dolapo Fasawe, said the administration was working with Rotaract Clubs and other partners to educate young people about the health risks of air pollution. She said the partnership would expand outreach efforts and inspire youth-led action on environmental sustainability.

The advocacy group, led by Ms. Daniella Omotola, a Rotaractor and behavioural advocate, included members of various Rotaract Clubs and National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members.

Omotola said the team is using interactive methods such as competitions, debates, talent hunts, and social media challenges to involve students and encourage creativity in environmental protection.

“Air pollution affects our planet and our lives,” she said. “As youths, we must get involved in protecting our environment for future generations.”

Omotola expressed appreciation to the FCT Minister, Barr. Nyesom Wike, and Dr. Fasawe for their support and confidence in the youths’ capacity to drive change through the ‘Breathe Clean Air Abuja’ project, which officially launches on November 13.
