The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has applauded the United States government for redesignating Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern,” describing the move as a triumph for justice and human rights.
In a statement released on Sunday, the group’s spokesperson, Emma Powerful, expressed gratitude to former U.S. President Donald Trump, Senator Ted Cruz, and all “friends of Biafra” who advocated for international attention to the alleged persecution of Christians and Igbos in Nigeria.
IPOB said the development follows a recent Canadian court ruling that reportedly categorized Nigeria’s two dominant political parties — the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) — as “terror-enabling organizations.”

“The designation by the U.S. is not merely symbolic; it is a moral victory for justice, truth, and the sanctity of human life,” the statement read.
“By exposing the Nigerian state’s complicity in ethnic and religious violence, the international community has taken a bold step toward ending state-sponsored killings and oppression.”
The pro-Biafra movement also called on Washington to launch an independent investigation into persistent ethno-religious killings, especially in the South-East region, to uncover the “perpetrators, financiers, and political enablers” behind the bloodshed.
IPOB commended Biafrans in the diaspora, including the American Veterans of Igbo Descent (AVID) and other advocacy groups, for their continued efforts to raise global awareness about alleged injustices in Nigeria.
“This recognition will go down in history as a milestone for all who have fought against tyranny and impunity,” the group added. “It brings renewed hope to long-suffering communities in the South-East and Middle Belt.”
The statement concluded by reaffirming IPOB’s commitment to its campaign for freedom and justice, insisting that the U.S. designation marks “another step toward the restoration of the dignity of all peoples trapped in this Lugardian contraption called Nigeria.”
