West Ham thump Newcastle 3-1, record first home win in over eight months

West Ham United secured their first home victory in over eight months with a hard-fought 3-1 comeback win over Newcastle United at the London Stadium on Sunday.

Jacob Murphy opened the scoring for Newcastle with a crisp strike from the edge of the box, moments after Jarrod Bowen had rattled the post for the hosts.

Paqueta sparks the comeback

The Hammers responded strongly, and Lucas Paqueta levelled the score with a powerful shot from distance midway through the first half.

Their persistence paid off again when Sven Botman inadvertently turned Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s low cross into his own net to give West Ham the lead before the break.

Soucek seals the victory

Despite a VAR drama earlier that saw a penalty overturned after replays showed Malick Thiaw got the ball before fouling Bowen, West Ham remained dominant.

Substitute Tomas Soucek sealed the result in stoppage time, tapping in after Nick Pope had saved Bowen’s effort.

Relief for Nuno, woes for Newcastle

The win marks West Ham’s first Premier League victory under manager Nuno Espirito Santo and ends their long wait for a home win since March.

They remain in the relegation zone but are now just three points behind 17th-placed Burnley.

For Newcastle, the result extends their dismal away run, they have now gone seven months without a league victory on the road.
