Kano communities seek security reinforcement over bandit threats

Community leaders from Faruruwa, Tsaure, Dan Shado, Gwauron Dutse, Furaku, Yanganau, and Unguwar Tsamiya in Shanono Local Government Area of Kano State have renewed their call for increased security presence to curb rising bandit attacks in the area.

Umar Bagobiri, chairman of the Security Committee of Faruruwa and surrounding communities, made the appeal while addressing journalists in Kano on Saturday.

Bagobiri lamented that despite the deployment of security personnel to the affected communities, bandits continue to launch attacks—killing, abducting residents, and carting away valuables.

Speaking through Prof. Mohammed D. Mukhtar, Bagobiri explained that the bandits were infiltrating Kano from neighboring Katsina State through a border opening in Tsanyawa Local Government Area.

According to him, the attackers diverted their operations to border towns in Kano following a peace accord reached with the Katsina State Government, which reportedly restricted their activities in that state.

“We appreciate the deployment of security personnel to the affected areas by the Federal Government, but the exercise has not stopped the security breach, as the bandits are still terrorising our communities,” Bagobiri said.

He noted that many residents have fled their homes, seeking refuge in Kano city and other safer locations outside the state.

“We are afraid that unless this banditry is decisively addressed, the terrorists may escalate their attacks to other Local Government Areas, including Bichi—and from there, possibly reach Kano, the state capital,” he warned.

Bagobiri appealed to President Bola Tinubu to work closely with the new Service Chiefs to re-strategise and defeat the bandits, thereby restoring peace and order to the affected communities.

He also urged Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to collaborate with the federal government and fully support the security agencies deployed to Kano State.

Furthermore, he advised Governor Yusuf to work with his Katsina State counterpart to devise effective measures for blocking the border routes being used by bandits to infiltrate Kano from Katsina.
