Former PDP Deputy National Chairman Chief Olabode George has branded Friday’s Federal High Court ruling halting the party’s November 15-16 National Convention in Ibadan as “the joke of the century” and “open recipe for anarchy.”
Justice James Omotosho’s order, issued in Abuja, prompted George, the Atona Oodua of Yorubaland to demand urgent intervention by the Chief Justice of Nigeria and the National Judicial Council, warning the judgement risks national breakdown akin to the 1962 Western Region crisis that triggered the First Republic’s collapse and the 1967-1970 civil war.
“This judgement will consume this country,” George declared in a statement. “It is high time the judge put down his wig and gown to join politics. Has the judiciary gone to the dogs?”He insisted the PDP fully complied with the 1999 Constitution, INEC guidelines, and its own charter, with INEC officials present at all preparatory congresses without objection.
“INEC is not complaining. The judge did not even call INEC to cross-check facts,” George fumed, questioning the court’s jurisdiction over internal party affairs and hinting at political motives.
Labeling the ruling “judicial brigandage,” the PDP founding member urged judicial restraint to protect democracy.
“PDP is the oldest and most experienced party since 1998, we have always followed the law. Nobody should teach us what we already know,” he added.
The convention halt follows internal PDP disputes, deepening the opposition’s leadership crisis.
