The Kebbi State Police Command has dismissed as false and mischievous a viral social media report alleging that a retired Assistant Controller of Customs had constructed a private airport in the Argungu forest to smuggle cocaine and other illicit drugs into Nigeria.
In a statement issued on Wednesday by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, CSP Nafi’u Abubakar, the police described the claim as “baseless, misleading, and a calculated attempt to tarnish the image of the State and its security agencies.”
Abubakar said the Command views the publication as a deliberate act of misinformation aimed at creating panic, emboldening criminal elements, and undermining the ongoing security operations in the state.
“The Kebbi State Police Command categorically refutes this mischievous narrative. It is a total fabrication designed to mislead the public and discredit the sustained efforts of our officers in combating crime,” the statement read in part.
While assuring residents of the Command’s unwavering commitment to protecting lives and property, Abubakar urged members of the public to disregard the rumour and remain vigilant.
He further cautioned individuals and groups spreading false information to desist, warning that such acts could have grave implications for public peace and safety.
“We will continue to collaborate with credible media professionals to keep the public informed and to counter the menace of fake news, which poses a serious threat to our society,” he added.
The Police Command reiterated its resolve to ensure that Kebbi State remains peaceful and free from criminal activities.
