Good morning Nigeria. Welcome to the Naija News roundup of top newspaper headlines in Nigeria for today, Wednesday, 29th October, 2025
The Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, has revealed that former President Goodluck Jonathan’s suspension of fuel subsidy removal was not in response to public protests but rather due to fears of Boko Haram’s suicide attacks on demonstrators.
Naija News reports that Sanusi made the disclosure while speaking at the Oxford Global Think Tank Leadership Conference, themed “Better Leader for a Better Nigeria.”
The Emir, who at the time of Jonathan’s administration was the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and a major promoter of fuel subsidy removal, said the government was more concerned about national security threats than the street demonstrations.
He explained that the policy described as fuel subsidy was essentially “a hedge,” with the government paying to maintain fuel prices at a fixed level.
The Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Internal Security, Hon. Garba Ibrahim Muhammad, has disclosed that terrorists have issued threats to bomb the National Assembly Complex.
Naija News reports that Garba made the revelation on Tuesday during a public hearing on a bill seeking to establish a Legislative Security Directorate, designed to enhance security management and safeguard lawmakers, staff, and visitors within the National Assembly.
“We have received threats from terrorists to bomb the National Assembly Complex and threats from protesters to lock up the National Assembly,” Garba stated.
The lawmaker said the legislature, Nigeria’s seat of democracy, has been increasingly exposed to security threats including car and motorcycle theft, vandalism, infiltration by unregistered visitors, and use of fake identity cards.
He warned that failure to address the lapses could disrupt legislative activities with grave implications for governance and democracy.
The National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has made a personal appeal to President Bola Tinubu for his intervention in their plight, warning that the system is on the verge of collapse.
The Doctors, in a letter on Monday, titled ‘A Passionate Appeal to the Commander-in-Chief of the Federation’, requested Tinubu’s personal intervention in ensuring that their 19-point demands are met.
The letter, signed by NARD president, Mohammed Suleiman, pointed out that they are not asking for luxuries, but the implementation of government promises to them, which include payment of salary arrears, implementation of the consolidated medical salary structure (CONMESS), and improved welfare for resident doctors.
The National Security Adviser (NSA), Nuhu Ribadu, has issued a stern warning to politicians and stakeholders ahead of the November 8, 2025, Anambra governorship election.
Speaking on Tuesday at the meeting of the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security (ICCES) held at INEC Headquarters, Abuja, the NSA warned that violence will not be tolerated.
Represented by the Director of Internal Security, Hassan Abdullahi, the NSA reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to ensuring a peaceful and secure environment for the poll.
He charged political parties and candidates to promote peace and discourage violence before, during, and after the exercise.
The NSA noted that the government is working with political leaders and local stakeholders to ensure the non-tolerance of violence.
The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has opened up on the reason a media personality, Pretty Mike, was arrested in a nightclub.
Recall that Naija News reported that the Pretty Mike was arrested in a night club alongside others.
Speaking on the development in a statement by its Director of Media and Advocacy, Femi Babafemi, the Agency stated that any gathering organized for the purpose of consuming, distributing, or abusing illicit substances is an act of criminality.
Babafemi explained that the NDLEA carried out a raid at a drug party, which held on the night of Saturday, 25th October, into the early hours of Sunday, 26th October 2025, at Proxy Night Club located at 7 Akin Adesola street, Victoria Island, Lagos, where over 100 attendees were arrested along with the owner of the facility, Mike Eze Nwalie Nwogu alias Pretty Mike and his manager, Joachin Millary.
He warned night club operators and fun seekers that it is illegal to organize, host and attend drug parties.
Former Governor of Ekiti State, Kayode Fayemi, has drawn a comparison between former President, Goodluck Jonathan, and President Bola Tinubu’s approach to subsidy removal.
Naija News reports that Fayemi, while speaking at the Oxford Global Think Tank Leadership Conference held on Tuesday in Abuja, reflected on Nigeria’s economic policies, leadership values, and the courage needed to make tough governance decisions.
Fayemi blamed Jonathan for lacking the courage to implement the removal of the fuel subsidy during his administration, despite having the support of key stakeholders at the time.
He revealed that, contrary to public perception, many governors under Jonathan’s administration, including himself, supported the removal of fuel subsidy, even though the then-opposition party, Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), opposed it politically.
Fayemi criticised Jonathan for bowing to political pressure instead of standing firm on what he believed was an economically sound policy.
In contrast to Jonathan, Fayemi commended Tinubu for showing decisive leadership by ending the fuel subsidy from the first day of his administration, despite the economic and political backlash that followed.
Nollywood actor Uzor Arukwe has urged single women to focus on building their lives and developing themselves before desiring to marry wealthy and caring men.
Naija News reports that he made the statement while reacting to online praises for his role as Odogwu, a generous billionaire lover in the movie Love In Every World 2.
Many social media users have described the character as the type of man they wish to marry.
Arukwe in a tweet explained that in the film, the female character Chioma, played by Bambam, was already a hardworking and valuable woman before the billionaire began supporting her.
According to him, Odogwu did not need to question her contributions to their relationship because her industrious nature was already evident.
The actor advised women to focus on personal growth and self-worth, saying that when they build value for themselves, good men who appreciate their strength and character will naturally find them.
Nollywood actor Emeka Okoye has shared that his body size has caused him to lose several acting opportunities in the movie industry.
The actor, who began his career in 1999, said that producers have often overlooked him for certain roles because of his chubby appearance.
He explained in an interview with Saturday Sun that this has happened multiple times.
He said he also faced rejection when he was slimmer, as some filmmakers then considered him too small for their preferred characters.
Despite these challenges, Okoye said he remains grateful for the roles he has been given and content with how far he has come in his career.
The To Kill A Monkey star also spoke about his journey in Nollywood, recalling how he started with the movie Prophet of Darkness in Asaba and faced many trials along the way.
He explained that his strong faith and dedication helped him remain focused despite setbacks.
The Super Falcons of Nigeria will defend their continental crown at next year’s Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) after edging past the Amazons of the Benin Republic 3-1 on aggregate.
Naija News reports that the 10-time African champions secured a 2-0 victory in the first leg of the qualifiers in Lome, Togo, before being held to a 1-1 draw in the return leg played at the MKO Abiola Stadium, Abeokuta, Ogun State, on Tuesday.
Leicester City defender Ashleigh Plumptre opened the scoring in the 12th minute with her first-ever goal for Nigeria.
She rose above the Benin defence to head home a well-placed cross from Esther Okoronkwo.
The home crowd erupted as the Falcons took control early on, dominating possession and pressing their opponents.
Despite the early setback, the Amazons of the Benin Republic refused to be intimidated. Fielding as many as 10 foreign-based players, they gave the Falcons a stern test throughout the encounter.
Their resilience was rewarded in the 80th minute when they grabbed the equaliser, shortly after captain Rasheedat Ajibade missed a golden chance to extend Nigeria’s lead.
The match ended 1-1, but the Falcons’ two-goal cushion from the first leg ensured they sealed passage to the finals of the competition.
Lionel Messi has left the door open for a return to the FIFA World Cup stage in 2026 but says he will only make a final decision after seeing how his body holds up next season with Inter Miami.
The Argentine captain, now 38, led his country to World Cup glory in Qatar two years ago and admits the thought of defending that title still excites him.
Speaking in an interview with NBC News aired on Monday, Messi said he would love to represent Argentina again if he feels physically ready.
The 2026 tournament will be staged across the United States, Mexico, and Canada. Messi, who turns 39 next June, knows it would be a challenge to compete at that level again but says his decision will come down to his condition during Inter Miami’s preseason.
