Inter Milan and Spanish goalkeeper Josep Martinez was involved in a tragic road accident on Tuesday morning that left an 81-year-old man dead.
Josep Martinez, 27, was reportedly driving to training just before 10 a.m. when the crash happened in Fenegro, a small town near Appiano Gentile, where Inter’s training ground is located.
Emergency services arrived quickly, including police officers, paramedics, and an air ambulance, but the elderly man, who was in a motorised wheelchair, died at the scene despite their efforts to save him.
“The car driven by Inter goalkeeper Josep Martinez hit a man who was in an electric wheelchair travelling on a cycle path alongside a road in the province of Como,” Italian police told Reuters.
“Martinez stopped his car in order to help the man, who died before the arrival of the ambulance.”
Investigators from the Carabinieri have begun looking into the cause of the accident. Early indications suggest the man may have suffered a medical emergency that caused his wheelchair to move into the path of Martinez’s car.
Martinez, who was not physically hurt, is said to be deeply shaken by the incident and is cooperating fully with the authorities.
Following the tragedy, Inter’s manager Cristian Chivu cancelled his pre-match press conference ahead of the team’s Serie A fixture against Fiorentina, which was scheduled for Tuesday afternoon.
Since joining Inter last season, Martinez has made 12 appearances across all competitions and kept seven clean sheets. He previously played for Genoa, RB Leipzig, and Las Palmas before making the move to Milan.
The Spanish goalkeeper has one international cap to his name and stepped up for Inter earlier this year when first-choice goalkeeper Yann Sommer was sidelined with a fractured thumb. So far this season, he has featured in two of Inter’s eight Serie A matches.
