NEMA Alerts Residents Of Kebbi, Niger, Kwara To Evacuate Flood-Prone Areas

The Director-General of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Mrs. Zubaida Umar, has issued an urgent directive for residents of Kebbi, Niger, and Kwara states.

She warned that communities along the River Niger are at risk and advised people in flood-prone areas to evacuate immediately to safer locations.

The directive comes amid rising water levels upstream in the Republic of Benin. Umar’s statement was released on Friday.

“Residents in Kebbi, Niger, and Kwara states, which share borders with Benin Republic, are particularly at risk and are advised to take necessary precautions,” Umar said.

“NEMA offices have been instructed to sensitise communities to remain vigilant and advise residents in high-risk flood plains to evacuate to safer, higher grounds.”

The DG further urged state governments to strengthen their Emergency Management Agencies (SEMAs) and Local Emergency Management Committees (LEMCs).

She emphasized the importance of activating contingency plans and implementing preparedness measures to ensure community safety.

She added, “The agency is working to mitigate the potential impact of this year’s flooding and protect communities at risk.

“We urge everyone to cooperate fully with our teams and local authorities to prevent loss of lives and property.”

Umar also highlighted the importance of early action: “Do not wait until waters rise before moving.

“Early evacuation is key. Families should identify safe locations and have an emergency kit ready.”

NEMA emphasized that communities along the River Niger in the three states are most vulnerable due to their proximity to Benin and the river’s course.

“We are closely monitoring water levels and will issue continuous updates. Residents must stay informed and follow our guidance,” she added.
