Shatta Wale Arrested In Accra Over Lamborghini Linked To US Fraud Probe

Ghanaian singer Shatta Wale, born Charles Nii Armah Mensah, was arrested in Accra on Wednesday, 20 August 2025, as part of a United States investigation into the purchase of a Lamborghini.

The arrest, confirmed by Ghana’s Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) on Thursday, concerns a 2019 Lamborghini Urus allegedly bought with proceeds from a $4 million US fraud case.

Hundreds of fans gathered outside the EOCO office in Accra on Thursday, vowing to remain overnight until the singer is released. One fan told AFP: “Until our king walks out, we won’t move – even if we sleep here.”

The investigation is linked to a wider US fraud probe involving Ghanaian national Nana Kwabena Amuah, who is currently serving a prison sentence in the United States, the EOCO said.

According to EOCO, the Lamborghini, seized earlier this year, is subject to a US District Court order from the Eastern District of Kentucky authorising the United States government to take possession of the vehicle in Ghana as compensation.

Shatta Wale arrived at the EOCO on Wednesday afternoon, awaiting his lawyer before questioning continued into the evening. He was granted bail of 10 million cedis (approximately \$900,000) but remained in custody pending verification of his guarantors.

The agency noted that the singer has not produced documentation proving ownership of the car. Shatta Wale reportedly told investigators he purchased the Lamborghini for \$150,000 from the “street”, possibly via a WhatsApp contact named “Zak”, whose identity he could not provide and whose contact he said he discarded.

EOCO said it acted on requests from the FBI and the US Department of Justice to track the vehicle and pursue leads locally.

Shatta Wale’s legal team has maintained that he bought the car in good faith and denied any knowledge of criminal links.
