The Bernabéu atmosphere was electric from the first whistle, and the home fans didn’t take long to erupt. In the 22nd minute, Mbappé broke the deadlock after linking up with Vinícius Júnior before firing past Wojciech Szczęsny.
The Frenchman looked to have doubled his tally with a stunning volley minutes later, but the flag went up for offside.
Barcelona pulled level through Fermin López, who calmly slotted home in the 38th minute after a clever assist from Marcus Rashford. The equaliser silenced the crowd briefly, but Madrid’s reply was swift.
Five minutes later, Jude Bellingham restored Real Madrid’s lead, reacting fastest to a rebound from Éder Militão’s header to tap in from close range.
The second half saw chances at both ends. Mbappé had an opportunity to seal it from the penalty spot in the 52nd minute, but Szczęsny guessed right and pulled off a superb save. Barcelona pressed hard for another equaliser, yet Thibaut Courtois was in top form, denying Fermin and Ferran Torres.
As frustration grew, Pedri’s late red card in stoppage time ended any hope of a Barcelona comeback.
The result leaves Real Madrid top of the La Liga table with 27 points in 10 games, five points above second-placed Barcelona.
