APC demands cancellation of Kano by-election over violence – Daily Trust

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to cancel the Shanono/Bagwai State Constituency by-election and the Ghari Constituency rerun election in Kano State, citing widespread violence and disruption by armed thugs.

Over 200 thugs were arrested by the police across the state during the exercise.

In a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, the ruling party alleged that verifiable reports from Shanono, Bagwai and Ghari showed that voters fled polling units as security personnel were overwhelmed by violence.

“The APC calls on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to immediately cancel the by-elections for Shanono/Bagwai constituency and the Ghari constituency rerun election in Kano State due to widespread extreme violence and election disruption by armed thugs across several polling units,” the statement read in part.

The party maintained that proceeding with the elections under what it described as “utter brigandage and outright violent voter intimidation” would contravene the principles of free, fair, and peaceful polls and set what it called a dangerous precedent.
