Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, paid a condolence visit to the family of the late Chief Audu Ogbeh, former Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, who passed away on August 9, 2025, at the age of 78.
The visit, which took place at Ogbeh’s residence in Abuja, was a gesture of solidarity and respect for the late statesman’s contributions to Nigeria’s political and agricultural landscape.
Obi, who described Ogbeh as a visionary and insightful politician, expressed deep sorrow over his passing, noting their close relationship and shared passion for agricultural development.
In a heartfelt post on X, Obi wrote, “I have just received the deeply saddening news of the passing of Chief Audu Ogbeh, a statesman with whom I had the privilege of sharing a close relationship.
“He was one of those rare politicians with whom I could have genuine and insightful discussions about our beloved country, particularly on agriculture, a sector he was deeply passionate about.”
During the visit, Obi consoled Ogbeh’s family, including his wife, Justina Obehi Ogbeh, and praised the late minister’s dedication to national self-reliance in food production.
He highlighted Ogbeh’s impactful tenure as Minister of Agriculture from 2015 to 2019 under President Muhammadu Buhari, during which he championed policies like the cassava flour initiative and the Rural Grazing Area (Ruga) plan to support farmers and reduce import dependency.
His family confirmed he passed away peacefully, leaving behind a legacy of integrity and service.
Obi’s visit followed similar condolence visits by prominent figures, including Vice President Kashim Shettima, who led a federal delegation, and Senator George Akume, Secretary to the Government of the Federation.
