Police Arrest 288 Suspected Thugs In Kano By-elections


The Kano State Police Command has revealed that a total of 288 suspected thugs were arrested on Saturday, August 16, 2025, during the ongoing by-elections in the state.

Police said the suspects where apprehended while trying to disrupt the re-run and by-elections.

Spokesperson of the Command, Abdullahi Kiyawa, made this known on his Facebook page.

According to Kiyawa, the suspects were arrested with dangerous weapons including a pump action rifle, locally made guns, knives, cutlasses, among others.

LEADERSHIP earlier reported the Kano Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Ambassador Abdu Zango said over 100 suspected thugs were arrested during the exercise.

Amb Zango stated while addressing journalists at the INEC local government headquarters at Bagwai.

He warned that further arrests could be made to ensure peaceful conduct of the elections while assuring that those arrested would be prosecuted.

The REC while commending the security agents comprising the Nigerian Police, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) as well as officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) assured that all areas earlier destabilised by the thugs during the exercise were subsequently stabilised.
