FG Officially Launch TVET Programme with 250,000 Trainees Matched to Skill Centers

The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially commenced the training phase of its Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Programme.

The announcement was made by Tunji Alausa, Minister of Education, in an X post, on Friday.

The initiative, launched in May, has attracted over 1.3 million applications for its 6–12 month master training track, with 970,000 candidates certified as eligible.

The programme offers hands-on training in 25 trades approved by the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), including Hospitality, Fashion and Garment Making, Livestock and Animal Husbandry, and Solar Photovoltaics.

The first cohort of 250,000 trainees has been matched to over 1,700 training centers nationwide.

During a visit to two centers in Abuja, Alausa expressed optimism about the programme’s impact, noting the enthusiasm of young Nigerians, many with tertiary education, seeking practical skills to enhance their livelihoods and contribute to the economy.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has prioritized transforming Nigeria into a knowledge-driven economy, with TVET as a cornerstone.

To ensure sustainability, the President has approved allocating 5% of Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) resources to support and scale the programme nationwide.

The initiative is poised to empower millions with industry-relevant skills, aligning with Nigeria’s vision for economic diversification and growth.
