Aide quits PDP, backs Diri

A major political shift has occurred in Bayelsa State as the Technical Assistants to Governor Douye Diri have formally announced their resignation from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). The group made the announcement on Thursday, October 23, 2025, during a press briefing held at the Special Adviser on Political Matters’ office, Annex 111, Yenagoa.

The decision follows Governor Douye Diri’s recent departure from the PDP, which he announced on October 15, 2025. The governor’s exit from the party he had represented throughout his political career has continued to generate wide political reactions across Bayelsa State and beyond.

In a statement jointly signed by the Chairman of the Technical Assistants Forum, Hon. Ogidi Ben Bara, and the Secretary General, Hon. Bibobara Kitchen, the aides described their resignation as a show of solidarity and loyalty to the governor. They emphasized that the move was made after careful consultations and deliberations with key stakeholders and supporters across the state.

According to the statement, the group believes Governor Diri’s decision to leave the PDP was driven by his desire to reposition Bayelsa for sustained peace, unity, and development. They described the governor’s action as courageous and sincere, reflecting his commitment to the long-term interests of the people of Bayelsa State.

The statement noted that leadership requires conviction and the ability to make difficult decisions for the collective good. The Technical Assistants stated that, in alignment with Governor Diri’s principles and vision for the state, they had no choice but to follow suit and resign their membership of the PDP.

The aides commended the governor for what they described as his exceptional record in governance, inclusiveness, and development-oriented leadership. They pledged to continue supporting his political direction and to contribute to his vision of consolidating peace and promoting sustainable development in the state.

“Our collective resignation from the PDP demonstrates our solidarity, loyalty, and unwavering belief in the leadership of His Excellency, Governor Douye Diri,” the statement read. “We stand firmly with him as he charts a new political course focused on unity and progress for Bayelsa State.”

The group did not, however, disclose whether they would be joining another political party or what the governor’s next political move might be. Their statement centered mainly on support for the governor’s leadership and commitment to good governance.

Governor Douye Diri’s resignation from the PDP marks a significant turning point in Bayelsa’s political landscape. Diri, who was first elected governor under the PDP platform, has been a key figure in the party both within the state and at the national level. His departure, and now the collective resignation of his aides, is expected to reshape political alliances and strategies ahead of future elections.

Political observers in Bayelsa have begun to speculate about the governor’s next move, with some suggesting he may be preparing to align with a new coalition or political platform. Others see the development as part of a broader effort to reposition Bayelsa’s leadership dynamics in response to changing national political realities.

For now, the Technical Assistants’ collective resignation underscores the depth of loyalty within Governor Diri’s inner circle and signals a possible realignment of political forces in the state. Their unified stance suggests that the governor’s decision enjoys broad support among his close aides, many of whom play critical roles in implementing state policies and coordinating development programs.

The statement concluded with an expression of faith in the future of Bayelsa under Governor Diri’s leadership. “We remain committed to the progress and prosperity of Bayelsa State,” it said. “May God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria and our dear Bayelsa State.”

The resignations add to the growing list of political developments emerging from Bayelsa as the state prepares for what could be a significant realignment ahead of upcoming electoral contests. At the moment, both the governor and his aides have maintained silence on their next political destination, leaving the public and political watchers in anticipation of the next chapter in Bayelsa’s evolving political story.
