Eric Chelle, head coach of the Super Eagles, disclosed that he accepted a pay cut to lead the Nigerian national team, driven by his belief in their potential and his desire to leave a lasting legacy.
In an interview with journalist Osasu Obayiuwana, Chelle said, “I didn’t come to Nigeria for money. I earned more in my previous job. I came because this is a big team, and I want to prove and achieve something. I’m here for the challenge, and that hasn’t changed.”
As the Super Eagles face mounting pressure to secure qualification for the 2026 World Cup, Chelle is preparing for critical upcoming matches, including Rwanda’s visit to Uyo next month and a pivotal clash in South Africa.
Despite the uncertainty surrounding his role, Chelle remains composed, acknowledging the precarious nature of football management.
“I know I can be sacked after one match—that’s football life,” he remarked. “But if that happens, they must be ready to pay out my contract.”
