President Bola Tinubu has nominated Ikechukwu Ugwuegede to represent the South-East on the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) board, addressing the region’s earlier exclusion from the board’s composition.
The nomination was announced in a letter read by Senate President Godswill Akpabio during Wednesday’s plenary session.
Ugwuegede, who served as chairman of the Enugu Capital Territory Development Authority (ECTDA) from 2011 to 2015, ran for the Nsukka/Igboeze South federal constituency in the 2019 elections under the All Progressives Congress (APC).
His nomination follows Tinubu’s earlier submission of NCC board nominees, which included Idris Olorunnimbe (chairman, South-West), Aminu Maida (executive vice-chairman, North-West), Abraham Oshidami (executive commissioner, technical services, North-Central), Rimini Makama (executive commissioner, stakeholder management, North-East), Hajia Maryam Bayi, Col Abdulwahab Lawal (rtd), Senator Lekan Mustafa (South-West), Chris Okorie (South-South), and Princess Oforitsenere Emiko (commissioner, South-South), all of whom have been confirmed by the Senate.
In his letter, Tinubu urged the Senate to consider and confirm Ugwuegede’s nomination promptly, stating, “Please accept, distinguished senators and Senate President, the assurances of my highest consideration and personal regards.”
The nomination ensures regional balance on the NCC board, aligning with calls for equitable representation across Nigeria’s geopolitical zones.
